Although three-piece suits were relatively out of fashion in the ’80s, they came back strong in the ’90s, thanks to Lauren-led Anglophilia. In Britain, where central heating is still something of a luxury, the three-piece suit has been a perennial choice. It is also a suit favored by men who like clothes, so perhaps that’s why you feel you have to be of a certain age. I think three-piece suits look cute on 7-year-olds, but it’s a question of attitude. You’ve got to feel vested. Finally, I think the three-piece suit makes sense in climate-controlled America. If the office is overheated, you can doff the jacket and still look dressed, unlike the guys in shirtsleeves. If it’s chilly, you’re groovily snug. Plus, wearing a vest gives you two extra pockets for watches, garrotes, poison pens, or what have you.
