Poll #41: Skirt Surprise

I think the idea of recycling men's dress shirts into womenswear like this is very clever. (Click to enlarge)

I think there are lots of ways a girl could work this look into her wardrobe. I like the way the sleeves serve as a belt, the shape is breezy and cool, and the on-seam pockets are very practical.

However, as thrilled as I am with the look, I'm not exactly thrilled with the price. I think the skirts are a just a little too DIY-looking for what the seller is asking, particularly in the waist area. (I find myself wishing the waistbands were finished in the standard format—as waistbands—instead of smocked.)

Waistbands notwithstanding, I return to the price. I'd want to pay less even for a standard waistband treatment. I'm wondering if I've still got Discount Fever, and if I'm expecting too much in the way of "low" prices from retailers.

So for this week's poll, I'm asking my Esteemed Readers to guess how much the skirt is. Or tell me what you think it's worth. I'll tell you the price after the poll is over.

Let's hear it.

Just wondering: Did you enter December GiveAway #3?

I don't think they should retail for more than about 40.00. No doubt, if you've found them they go for 600 bucks! :-)

it is cute but I would do it myself with a thrifted men's shirt before buying it. Although, if I were to buy it, it would have to be under $100 ...maybe WAY under .

I am guessing $125. I wouldn't pay that. I think you could have one made by a tailor for MUCH less.

That an interesting skirt. I think I like the second of the skirt better. I couldn't see myself shoveling out more than $50 for that though...Then again, I rarely spend over $50 on any clothes item.

I'm confused - where are they being sold? i like them but i think the sleeves for a belt is a bit naff!

WendyB said...

I'm with Emma...I like them except for the sleeves, which look silly.

I used to have one like that I made in high school for some project in my sewing class. I think they're cute, but really, really easy to make (especially if the waistband is just elasticised).

Cost to make would be about $5 (thrifted shirt + thread & elastic), plus around an hour's labour. I guess I'd pay about $45 at an absolute maximum. Well, I wouldn't buy one at all since I know how to make them - but you know what I mean.

I'd have to disagree with some of you on the sleeves. That's my favorite part of the skirts!! :)

probably less than 200. That's all I can say.

Not my cup of tea...

As a D.I.Y kinda gal i wouldn't pay that. But then I like the idea of it if you can't do that kind of thing yourself. Hhhhmmm, undecided.

First of all, I despise those men's shirts that have one front panel in one print, the other front panel in another, and so on. J Crew used to make them (perhaps it still does).

And this skirt does indeed look DIY with the sleeves comme ca. I'd take the price of the shirt, say, $75, and add $50 for the tailoring, and say that the retail price *should* be $125. But I bet it's staggeringly more.

I think it's a really cute, unusual piece ... but agree that it looks a bit slapdash. I'd pay no more than $40 myself, and imagine that it's somewhere in the $250 range to create such price-related outrage. ;)

I'd make it myself so I've gone for $1 -$100 but even that is silly money. clever idea except for the sleeves - now I know what to do with Mr MDS's shirts when the collars go!

I'm going to guess $320 ;)

I've actually had my eye on these for a while...they're cute for general summer wear but horrifically over-priced.

CDP said...

I love it. I think that hebden has inside information; had I not seen that comment, I'd have guessed that the seller was asking for $150 or so, but I don't think they're worth more than $60 or $70.

I like them and I like the concept. However I don't think I have 'discount fever' in not wanting to pay more than maybe $30 for them, simply because of the tailoring. The hem, the belts, the waist, it all looks pretty unfinished and as you said home-made.

For something with a similar shape, but which actually looks like a skirt I wouldn't mind paying more (assuming that I actually *had* the money... )

My guess is 201-300. Some cool hip, new york brand?

i'd guess $275, but i'd pay around $40. cute idea.

clever idea.

i am going to guess $225.

I like it, and would buy it for $30-$40. However my guess is that it retails for around $200.

Christina Lee said...

I love that!I'd say $100

Indeed a great idea for recycling.
But I would give more than $40.

Those are very cool.

they look weird.

That reminds me of a joke.

Guy waiting for a train goes and buys a kebab at the station. And then while he is bored and waiting, goes in to a jeans shop and buys a new pair of jeans.

Train comes, guy catches train. Riding along his stomach starts to burble. Then other parts start to burble. So he rushes along the train to find an empty bathroom, but while waiting he things he is going to fart; but follows through.

Ahem. Finds an empty bathroom and cleans up as much as possible but he doesnt want to have to take his trousers back to his seat so fecks them out the window. Ha ha says he, I have my new jeans in my carrier bag here..............

The shop assistant has wrapped up a denim jacket by mistake.

So when I see a skirt made out of a mens shirt; well.. you know.

They probably are expensive but they just look cheap - I think for them even $50 is too much.

But as it's someone's 'brilliant' idea I'm sure they're trying to flog them off for $150.

I have a friend who made a skirt out of one of her dad's shirts, it looked pretty cool. I'd like to think they don't charge overly much for those though, maybe a bit over the price of a nice shirt...$100 max?

Carolina Lange said...

I love the first one!
I guess about $150?!

up and down town said...

i think i just lied on the poll.
i voted $1-$100 (because that was the lowest choice) but the truth is i wouldn't pay a nickel for one of these skirts. if i liked the style, i would make my own.
so let's interpret my vote as what i think they should cost and not what i personally would pay.

up and down town said...

that's what i get for reading other comments. hebden blew it out of the water, and once she posted, it took just 2 hops before i tracked these down - don't think of it as predictable hebden, think of it as... reliable.

um...they look a little "home sewn" in my opinion, to cost anymore that 20 bucks. and it's something someone could easily do themselves. ive tied the sleeves of a dress together to fashion a skirt, and it costs me nada.
