Even Doug Henning couldn't do that kind of magic that magazines can do. Did you know he was married to relationship expert Barbara De Angelis and she was also married to the Men are from Mars guy. I don't know why I know that.;-)
That Dove film always makes me go "ooh, where can I get me some of that?" which means that I am clearly terminally shallow and a hopeless victim of all kinds of evil manipulation etc!
I'm much too serious to say what Dr Monkey said. But I do agree. About the whole hotness thing there. Um. Now where was I? Oh yes. Dove. (Clears throat seriously) On a more serious note I wish that I could buy into the whole Dove experience, but I'm far too jaded by corporate tricks for that mush. Dove want your money too, girls, and if they can make you feel good while cornering a feelgood niche in the process, then they're just over the crater-free, silky smooth moon. Arguably it serves a function as a wake-up call, but somehow it just reminds me of old PETA-era Naomi Campbell. Now where did she go?
The model looked good to me all the way through, right up to the photoshoppery, particularly the neckstension. Too bad. My cynicism aside, I have a close relation who's going through the horrors of anorexia with her 17 year old right now, and I guess kudos to Dove for highlighting that, more especially in their newer campaign follow-up (http://www.10ad.org/dove-tell-you-to-talk-to-your-daughter-before-the-industry-does/)
i'm with nick mcgivney - i agree with the message behind the dove video, but it's pure marketing, which is exploitation. also, self-esteem does not come from dove. or a workshop.
I actually attended a seminar with the woman who led this campaign (it's Canadian). Did you know that after the Coke logo, Dove is the most recognized logo in Canada? At any rate, it was the first, runaway viral marketing campaign of its scope. It was amazingly successful and has spawned 4 other campaigns that build on the theme - but have been even more controversial in some ways (see Nick's comment). And Nick is onto something. It really is and was about selling product. The same company that runs Dove runs Axe. They justify themselves on the basis of some really smart advertising, but they're part of the same corrupt machinery. (Sorry to be cynical.)
WOW. wow wow wow enc. that is amazing. AND I WILL BE USING IT IN THE CLASSROOM!!!! we are reading a story next week that centers around the ancient Chinese practice of foot binding, and as an opening activity the students are going to discuss the unrealistic--sometimes painful--things people do for beauty. this is PERFECT. perfect. this is exactly what young people--m&f--need to see.
Dr. Monkey: Thank you! I'm very honored to have a hot sister. She's the greatest.
WendyB: Carolyn is a classic beauty.
Imelda Matt: Agreed! I love the outfit so much!
Dr Zibbs: He's got a secret, I'd imagine, and one I'm not interested in knowing, frankly.
La Bel: GET OUT!!!!!!! I knew about the Venus/Mars guy, but not Henning. How on earth do you find these things out!?
PT&E: I never thought of that, but now that you mention it, you're right!
carolyn: You have a fan club!
Make Do: I put in Doug Henning because he always used call his work "The Worllllllld of Magic!!!!!!!!!!" with an affectation. It's an old joke, lost on anyone who isn't at least 40, and American. Carolyn is very magical.
Seeker: :D
CC: I know! I like that Dove is trying to get people to think, but I wonder how many cosmetics their parent company is producing each year.
Skye: I know she is! I'm a shallow victim of manipulation, too, btw.
Nick: Thanks for all the compliments! I agree that this Dove thing is tricky, and that they want our money too. I wonder how many cosmetics the parent company produces each year. You make an excellent point about NC, I haven't seen her on PETA's side for ages, though that doesn't mean she's not still there. As for your close relation who is helping the 17-year-old with anorexia, I wish luck to the entire family. That is a very serious disease, a creeping, destructive disease. I hope the girl can recover fully.
Storialist: It's amazing.
editor: I think any kind of manipulation—whether it's through photoshop or marketing—has to be examined, and picked apart by intelligent people like my Esteemed Readers.
K.Line: I'm all for cynicism, and thanks for posting this comment so that we can all be educated. I think Dove is just part of a parent company that is trying to sell products. I find the video amazing, though. I'll ask C about her kitties!
chuckles: Thanks!
Juaи +: I'm glad you enjoyed the videos. :D
cybill: LOL! Good idea! Photoshop can do anything.
teach people: Good one! This is why you're a teacher.
gorgeous family, and I love the Henning video! that dove video just reminds me of how annoying magazine covers are these days - it's ridiculous. no one looks like themselves they're so photoshopped.
Lovely. I'll make this a part of my blogaround this weekend. Wasn't completely unaware of the photoshop technique but it comes as lighting struck that it was in fact your sister... Whoa!
fashion herald: I can't imagine what I would feel like if I was a model, and did a cover shoot, then saw the actual product after it had been Photoshopped. Yikes.
La Bel: Oh, Cliffy, nobody would judge you! Especially not me! :)
kpriss: Thanks for coming by! Just for the record, it wasn't my sister in that video. I just wanted to show her to my Esteemed Readers, because I talk about her alot.
atelier: I like the idea that makeup can transform someone, but not all the computer intervention. That scares me.

I see hotness runs in your family. Hubba hubba!
Carolyn is very fetching indeed.
Ohhh, those satin pants and rainbow vest...too die for!
Why's Henning always smiling? Kind of creepy.

Holy Mackerel.
Has anyone ever told Carolyn she resembles Vivien Leigh?
You guys are making me blush. But thank you, it's made my day.
Pamela, Vivien Leigh?? Wow. I have never heard that. High praise indeed.
Ok the American magican is lost on me but your sister isn't amazing looks and cheekbones!
Your sister is really fetching.

Those dove short.films are amazing, they bring you back to earth!
The old magic vid was veryy funny :)
Thanks for sharing :)
I think they could have taken the guy from the first clip and turned him into the girl from the second clip. He certainly had the hair for it.

I am not sure how I know it. I have a strange gift for random trivia. I tray not to share it to often as I fear I will sound like Cliff Claven.

It's impressive, how a person changes...I guess it's the good part of being a woman and can use makeup
That man's costume - not to mention his assistant - astounding.
That dove film always makes me feel kind of sick.
