Dolce & Gabbana showed this patchwork skirt in their Fall/Winter 2008 collection.
Usually, I don't get into patchwork. In fact, some of you may remember my lack of interest in this bag last month. However, this is about as close as I'm ever going to get to liking patchwork. The leather* circles are fascinating to me.
I saw the skirt in July's Harper's Bazaar** before I looked at the whole collection online. When I saw the skirt in the magazine, I just assumed it was knee-length.

Then I saw the runway photo, showing the skirt as a calf-grazer. That's when they lost me.
Oh, did I mention the skirt is $3,895?
Gee whiz, that's a lot of patchwork!
Oh well. Maybe next time.
*Apologies to my not-so-into-leather readers.

La Rhoda looks great in that ad, love her hair
That full length shot makes a difference doesn't it? I think that lovely shape would work in other materials (as in non-patchwork) too.
I'm kinda liking the skirt. At first, no, but then it grew on me.
It's dreadful. They didn't "make it work."
apalling
I think I'm starting to like it, as you say the runway picture makes a lot of difference.
And please don't worry about your "not-so-into-leather readers", at least with me. We try to make some kind of difference but we must be realistic, the world is not going to change quikly.
The cruelty with the animals raised just to make things it's the worst.
xoxo
I actually really like the pattern, colors, etc, although I am not-so-into-leather myself! the length is what kills it.
That skirt is superb.
I wouldn't be caught dead, because unless you're literally shaped like a pool cue, it's going to be super unflattering.
It is hot though.
I like it better in the second picture; I actually like that length and I like the grey and the model's look better. The first picture looks like it could have been lifted from a 1981 Vogue ad.
Aretha: She always looks great to me!
cybill: To me, it does. I think the patchwork would have made a great jacket of some sort.
WendyB: There are definitely things I like about it, but I just can't get all the way onboard.
Dr. Monkey/Hammie: Not patchwork fans, eh? ;)
Seeker: I was thinking of you when I wrote that "not-so-into-leather" comment. :D Our world has been using leather so long, I wonder if it will ever be able to let go!
Pamcasso: Yes, for me, it's the length. Then the price tag!
Charponnaise: You're right the shape would make anyone look like a wide load.
CDP: LOL! I didn't think of that, the 1981 Vogue ad, that's dead on!
Couldn't pull it off myself, but I kinda love it!
must admit I like the length! i know, it's impossible, but we'll probably be seeing a lot of it because it's "new."
Hmmm...I vowed never to sport another patchwork look after the last wave. This skirt is quite fascinating though. I thought I would hate, but I really don't.
Mm ok goes against the grain here - I sort of admire their cheeck but no no no!
holy crap, is that model in the bottom shot dead? She is SUPER pale!
Apology accepted! ;) Does anyone else see a fish scale effect? Would look sort of mermaidish to me if it were a different material and color.
My patchwork bag of 5 years is still in the basement waiting a comeback. Love this though.
Sal: I'm not sure I'd even try it myself, but I can dream.
fashion herald: I bet it'll be knocked off in ten seconds!
Psyche: Do you think you could be converted?
Make Do: It's quite a cheeky collection.
teamslinger: There's a good chance she's UNdead. They usually are.
cuileann: It does look fishy to me! Greens and blues would have made a nice mermaid effect, don't you think?
Siljesfashion: I bet that bag you have is great. Maybe this patchwork will inspire you to unearth it.
I love the skirt too. Partly, no, mainly because of the earthy colours. I can't resist.
I agree about the length. I'd prefer it knee length as well. Mind you, I often invest and then run off to my tailor but I need to be okay with the amount of my investment first!!
It give me acid flashbacks, and that's never good.
um yeah, that skirt does not justify the $4000 price tag!
hmm the corduroy mutton sleeved blousey top + patchwork skirt? It's wayyy too stuffy and borderline polygamist cult for me.
Alice Olive: I'd be squeamish about cutting off a few inches' worth of this one!
Sister Wolf: There there, dear. Acid flashbacks are never good.
riz: Nope, cute but not THAT cute.
Marmalade: You know, I completely ignored the top. I'm glad you called it out!
If it was knee-length, I'd be all over it.
You know, E, when I saw that shoot - and really that very pic - I was blown away. It made me want to run out and buy that skirt stat. I even had a whole convo with Scott (really it was a lot of me talking about the outfit while he nodded). So funny it had a big impact on you too...
ambika: I think that's the general consensus. I wonder why the skirt wasn't done this way?
K.Line: I wonder if we could find skirts from the '70s done up that way for that look.
