Poll #5: Fraught Footwear

For a long time, I was such a shoe fiend, I did a lot of ill-advised shoe shopping. I used to rationalize cute, but improperly-fitting, questionable purchases, thinking "they'll stretch out," or "they'll break in," or "they don't pinch that much, I'll get used to them." I was wrong. I'd wear them, and they'd hurt. I'd grin and bear it until I got home, or at least into the car. (Sometimes, I'd drive barefoot just to avoid wearing painful shoes.) When I took them off, my beloved cute-but-painful shoes ended up in the donation pile. I knew they didn't fit in the first place, so why did I buy them? What I was thinking?

Ah, vanity. Cute is great, but I'm too much of a wimp for that kind of pain now, so I can't convince myself to buy or wear ill-fitting shoes anymore.

We arrive at Thursday's Poll: Do you wear ill-fitting shoes for the sake of Cute?

As usual, the poll is in the same position: upper left, on top of the sidebar. Please vote!

I've just recently given up wearing incredibly painful shoes. I'm just too old, and I don't drink enough to dull the pain!

I went with never, though the truth is more like "very occasionally when I make a mistake about how uncomfortable something is going to be" or "very occasionally when I am at the office and I can take them off at will" or "sometimes any shoe gets really uncomfortable when you walk miles in 90 degree summer heat and your feet swell".

But my philosophy is that the shoe should look perfect (like any garment) and should be comfortable enough to keep the feet happy and healthy through miles of trekking.

This is a really tall order - esp. if you can't blow 300 bucks on a pair of shoes you're going to wreck through overuse in 5 minutes anyway. K

I voted Never.

When I was younger and earning less, yes, I would often buy a shoe which looked cute, didn't cost much and then hurt like hell.

Now I'm older, earning more and spending more on my shoes, I refuse to buy a hurtful shoe! I've whittled the universe down to a few brands which fit me well, are made well and do not hurt. Most importantly, they're fabulously cute and I feel great wearing them (which is the point after all)!

And when someone crosses the street to tell me they love my shoes.... I consider that a return on my investment!

Oh dear, I committ this sin nearly every time I buy vintage or thrifted shoes. They are either slightly too big or too small, but I can't resist because I can't find them in my size! My toes and heels have suffered so much...

oh you know i don't.
today i was admiring a woman's shiny super cute patent peach flats. i was ready to ask her where she got them when she sat down and immediately slid her feet out and put the heels down over the leather in the back, turning them to slides (trying to give you a visual) just while she sat. it was clear that her feet needed a reprieve from the discomfort. that was all i needed to see to get over my interest.

I voted sometimes, although lately I haven't worn uncomfortable shoes as much. Last fall I was wearing a very cute pair of blue velvet 70's platform ankle strap shoes, and what did I do? I fell on my face. My right foot swelled up and turned purple for a month. Needless to say, I wore comfortable shoes for a while. I haven't had much of an occasion to wear high heel shoes since then, and I can't say I miss them much!

Is it odd that that I like those shoes you have posted.... I'm with Nancy...sometimes.... as it depends on the situation...if it involves a cab, a lot of couches and sitting down.... then I'd go for painful shoes definitely!

Iheartfashion: I'm too old for it, too.

K.Line: Never? I knew you were down-to-earth, but this is REALLY down-to-earth. I agree it's tough to know what shoes are "going to feel like later;" I just had to ask. I did so much shopping in shoes that felt fine at the outset, then shortly became devices of torture.

Alice Olive: Inexpensive, but cute shoes is exactly what I was talking about. I've found that the more I spend on a shoe, the better it feels. Compliments make it all worth while, I think.

Clothes Horse: Poor thing; I guess it doesn't matter if you're getting fun or satisfaction out of it. At least you can get close with sizes. My feet are a wacky shape and too big for vintage, so I'm out of luck.

up and down town: I knew you wouldn't. You're not that kind of girl!

Nancy: Oh no! I'm so sorry you fell. That's exactly what I would do in '70s platforms. You're a braver girl than I for wearing them.

susie_bubble: Cab/limo shoes are tricky, I agree: great if you're cabbing it. But if you have to walk much, they're seriously not on.

I am one of the fashion victims that wears excruciatingly painful shoes cause they're, well... hot. My feet are starting to feel the effects though, and it gets worse with age. I figure I've got another 6 or 7 years of this before my feet give out on me and I get corns and hammer toes. Yuck. hahaha

TheShoeGirl: With a name like that, I'd assume you are very dedicated to your item of choice. I hope you'll get more than 6 or 7 more years with your beloveds. Maybe you can invest in a nice foot massage each week.
